Braggot ingredientsI found myself at the grocery today, which sometimes leads to the impulse buying of several pounds of honey, as was the case today.  I kept it conservative today and just picked up 3 lbs, as I've had the rest of the pictured ingredients sitting around for months, with the intention of doing a small experiment batch of braggot.

A braggot, for those who don't know, is a mead made with added grain malt (like a beer wort) and sometimes, as in this case, with hops as well.  I made a very small batch experiment (1 gal) once before, but that was simply adding some extra dark malt extract I had to a bit of my standard mead wort, and though it added a little complexity, it really didn't satisfy my curiosity about the potential of a braggot.

So, I give you the latest evidence of my extreme boredom...

Purple Mountain MeadPurple Mountain Hefeweizen

These are probably not final labels, but I do have a batch of mead and a batch of hefeweizen beer bubbling away in fermenting carboys in my closet. You see, I did some work for a homebrew supplier lately, and got in the mood to create booze.

I've done some brewing in the past, but you know how boredom makes you commit heavily to projects, so I have labels ready for the Hefe and the Mead.

I think Purple Mountain (which is in no way a for-profit enterprise at this point, more of a for entertainment) will also put out a Pale Ale, a Bock, A Black Lager, and a European style ale.  Possibly more than that... I'll keep you posted, and in a few weeks when these batches are ready to drink, I'll probably post an update.

Oh, and I keep updating the beer guide, my other boozy side-project.

Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.
-- Benjamin Franklin

In an effort to increase the general gastronomical pleasure in the world, and to quit forgetting what beers I have tried in the past and enjoy, and which I hate, I have begun to catalogue the things that I drink. Note that this is a real, physical tasting book, and in it's own way a fun project. But given that I am putting effort into this thing, and won't always have said book available to me, I am mirroring the findings of my own personal beer tasting journal online.

So, if anyone is interested, see the shortsheet of beers (I support google docs.) This will be updated as fast as I can drink (which, being The Fish, is fast...)

Also, everything you never needed to know about beer at wikipedia
